FLAC is the right format to archive music in and the wrong one to carry around. This makes a portable copy without touching your originals.

How it works
Pick your file. The browser reads it straight from disk. There is no upload progress bar, because there is no upload.
The encoder loads once. A WebAssembly build of FFmpeg, around 30 MB, downloads the first time you use the site and stays cached afterwards.
Your processor does the work. Everything happens in this tab, at roughly half of real time on a modern laptop.
Save the result. The finished file is assembled in memory and handed to your downloads folder.
Lossless is for keeping, not for carrying
FLAC compresses audio without discarding anything — a FLAC file decodes back to exactly the samples that went in. That makes it ideal for archiving a collection or storing masters.
The cost is size. FLAC typically runs half the size of WAV, which still means three to five times an MP3 of the same track. A thousand-album library that fits on a phone as MP3 will not as FLAC.
Support is the other half. Car stereos, older players, most Bluetooth speakers and a good number of streaming uploads still expect MP3.
Keep the originals
Convert a copy and leave the FLAC files where they are. Because FLAC is lossless, you can regenerate MP3s at any bitrate later, at any quality you like. Delete the FLAC and that option is gone forever.
Common questions
How much quality will I lose?
At 320 kbps the difference is inaudible to nearly everyone under normal listening conditions, including on good headphones.
Why not just use FLAC everywhere?
Because a lot of hardware simply cannot play it, and the files are several times larger.
Can I get FLAC back from the MP3?
No. Compression discards data permanently. Always keep the original.
Do my files get uploaded?
No. Nothing leaves your device.
