How it works
Pick your file. The browser reads it straight from disk. There is no upload progress bar, because there is no upload.
The encoder loads once. A WebAssembly build of FFmpeg, around 30 MB, downloads the first time you use the site and stays cached afterwards.
Your processor does the work. Everything happens in this tab, at roughly half of real time on a modern laptop.
Save the result. The finished file is assembled in memory and handed to your downloads folder.
Why MKV specifically
MKV is the container of choice for long recordings: livestream captures, archived broadcasts, ripped lectures. Those are exactly the files where the audio alone is what you actually wanted.
The size difference is dramatic. A two-hour MKV can run several gigabytes; the same two hours as a 128 kbps MP3 is around 110 MB, which fits anywhere and streams over any connection.
MKV files frequently carry more than one audio track — an original language and a dub, or a commentary. This tool takes the first track it finds.
If you need a different track
There is no track selector here, because choosing between them requires inspecting the file in a way a browser tab handles poorly. If your MKV has several languages and you need a specific one, a desktop tool like MKVToolNix will let you pick before converting.

Can I keep the video?
Not with this tool — it produces audio only. Use the MKV to MP4 converter if you want to keep the picture.
