How it works
Pick your file. The browser reads it straight from disk. There is no upload progress bar, because there is no upload.
The encoder loads once. A WebAssembly build of FFmpeg, around 30 MB, downloads the first time you use the site and stays cached afterwards.
Your processor does the work. Everything happens in this tab, at roughly half of real time on a modern laptop.
Save the result. The finished file is assembled in memory and handed to your downloads folder.
One tool instead of a dozen
Most converters are format-specific: one page for MP4, another for MOV, another for MKV. That is a search-engine habit rather than a technical necessity. The decoder underneath handles all of them equally well.
This page accepts whatever you have. The encoder identifies the container, finds the audio stream inside it and re-encodes only that. Whether the video was H.264 in an MP4 or VP9 in a WebM makes no difference to the result.
That matters most with files you did not choose the format of — a download from a messaging app, an export from a screen recorder, footage handed over by someone else.
Speech and music want different settings
For talking — lectures, interviews, meetings, podcasts — 128 kbps is genuinely transparent and keeps the file small. Music needs 320 kbps, because compression artefacts show up first in cymbals, reverb tails and sustained high notes. When a recording contains both, 192 kbps is the setting that annoys nobody.
If you need WAV or want to copy the audio without re-encoding it, use extract audio.
Common questions
Which video formats are supported?
MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI, M4V and FLV, plus most variants of each. If a browser can read the container, the encoder can usually decode it.
Is this different from the MP4 to MP3 tool?
Only in what it expects. That page is aimed at MP4 specifically; this one takes anything. The output is identical.
Why is my MP3 quieter than the video?
Levels are preserved exactly. Video players often apply their own normalisation, which is what you were hearing before.
Do my files get uploaded?
No. The file is read from your disk by the browser and processed on your own machine.
