Xbox Game Bar will not record — what to check
The overlay opens, the capture widget is there, and either the record button does nothing or the clip never appears. There are five common causes and they are worth ruling out in a particular order.
Before anything else: Game Bar deliberately refuses to record File Explorer, the desktop itself and some system windows. If that is what you were pointing it at, nothing is broken — it is working as designed.
1. Captures are switched off
The single most common cause, and the easiest to miss because the overlay still opens normally. Recording is a separate setting from the overlay itself.
Open Settings, then Gaming, then Captures. Confirm that recording is enabled. On recent Windows builds this section also controls the maximum recording length and whether audio is captured at all — worth a look while you are there.
In the same Settings app, under Gaming and then Xbox Game Bar, check that the Game Bar is enabled and that the keyboard shortcut has not been reassigned by other software.
2. Background recording is off and you used the wrong shortcut
Two different features get confused constantly. Windows plus Alt plus R starts recording from that moment forward. Windows plus Alt plus G saves the last stretch of gameplay that already happened — and that only works if background recording was already running.
If you pressed the second shortcut expecting a clip of something that just occurred and got nothing, background recording was off. It lives in the same Captures settings page and costs performance while active, which is why it is disabled by default.
3. Windows does not consider it a game
Game Bar is built around games and treats other applications inconsistently. Some record fine, some produce a black frame, and some refuse outright.
There is a manual override. With the application in focus, open the Game Bar overlay and look for the option confirming that this is a game. Ticking it makes Windows treat the window as recordable.
That works for many programs and not for all. Anything running with elevated privileges, or drawing its window through an unusual method, may still be refused.
4. Graphics driver or hardware encoder trouble
Recording uses your graphics card's hardware encoder. When the driver is out of date or the encoder is already occupied by another program, capture fails silently rather than reporting an error.
Close anything else that might be capturing — OBS, NVIDIA's overlay, AMD's, streaming software — and try again with only Game Bar running. If that fixes it, the encoder was in use elsewhere.
If it does not, update the graphics driver from the manufacturer directly rather than through Windows Update, which frequently lags behind by months.
5. The clips are saving somewhere you have not looked
Occasionally nothing is broken at all and the recordings are simply going somewhere unexpected. The default location is a Captures folder inside Videos in your user profile.
If that folder was moved, redirected to cloud storage, or sits on a drive that has filled up, recording can fail without any visible message. Check the destination has space and that the folder still exists where Windows expects it.
When to stop troubleshooting and switch tools
Game Bar is convenient and quite limited. It cannot record the desktop, it cannot capture a specific window of your choosing, it offers little control over quality, and on some hardware combinations it simply never behaves.
If you have worked through the list without success, the pragmatic move is a dedicated recorder rather than another hour of settings. OBS is free, captures anything on screen including the desktop, and does not depend on Windows deciding whether your application qualifies as a game.
After the recording exists
Game Bar clips arrive as MP4 and are usually larger than anything you can share directly. A few minutes at 1080p60 routinely exceeds what a chat platform or an email server will accept.
Cut it down to the part that mattered first — length affects size more than any quality setting, so start with the video trimmer.
If a Discord server refuses the upload, that is the size cap — fix it with compress for Discord.
For an email attachment or a general size limit, use the video compressor.
Common questions
Why is the Game Bar record button greyed out?
Most often because Windows does not classify the focused window as a game. Open the overlay with that window in focus and tick the option confirming it is a game.
Why can Game Bar not record my desktop?

Where do the recordings go?
