How it works
Pick your file. The browser opens it straight from disk. There is no upload, so there is nothing to wait for.
Nothing is downloaded first. Unlike the video tools, image conversion uses what is already built into your browser. It starts instantly.
Your machine does the work. The image is drawn to a canvas and written out in the new format, which takes a fraction of a second.
Save the result. The file goes straight to your downloads folder and the original is untouched.
Be clear about what this does and does not achieve
Converting to PNG makes the file lossless from this point forward. It does not undo the compression the JPEG already went through — the detail that was discarded when the photo was first saved is gone permanently, and no format change recovers it.
So the honest reason to do this is compatibility, not quality. Some upload forms accept PNG only. Some software refuses JPEG. Some workflows need a format that will not degrade further through repeated saving.
That last one is the genuinely useful case. Every time a JPEG is opened, edited and saved again it loses a little more. Moving to PNG stops that accumulation.
Expect the file to grow
A PNG of a photograph is typically three to five times larger than the JPEG it came from, because it stores every pixel exactly rather than approximating. That is the cost of losslessness and there is no way around it. If size matters more than format, the JPEG was already the better file.
Common questions
Will the photo look better as a PNG?
No. Whatever the JPEG discarded is already gone. PNG preserves what remains without improving it.
Why did the file get so much bigger?
PNG stores every pixel exactly. Photographs contain no repetition for it to exploit, so the result is several times the size.
Does it add transparency?
No. There was none in the JPEG to begin with — the image simply becomes a PNG with an opaque background.
